Washer Door Won’t Unlock: Safe Checks for Water, Heat and Child Lock

A washer may keep its door locked because water remains inside, the drum is hot or still spinning, or Child Lock is on. Try these safe checks and don’t force the door.

Why the door may stay locked

The door locks during a cycle to help prevent water from spilling out. It may remain locked if water is still in the drum or the drum is spinning.

After a cycle ends, the lock may take a little while to release. High temperatures can also keep the door locked until the washer cools down.

Start with these safe checks

Make sure the cycle has ended and the washer has drained. Wait a few moments and check whether the door-lock indicator has turned off.

If the washer was paused while filling with water, wait at least one minute before trying the door. If the washer is off, turn it on and wait for the lock to release.

Check Child Lock and heat

Child Lock can disable control-panel buttons and, on some models, keep the door locked. Check the display for a Child Lock indicator and use the button combination specified in your model’s manual to turn it off. The controls vary by model, and restarting the washer may not disable Child Lock.

If the washer or door is hot, do not try to open it. Wait until it has cooled down; hot water or steam can cause burns.

If water remains in the drum

If your washer offers a Spin Only cycle, use it to try to drain the water. The door is designed to stay locked while water remains inside.

Some front-load models have an emergency drain hose or a user-removable drain filter. Their location and access vary, so follow your model’s manual. If you use an emergency drain hose, have a suitable container ready; water may spill out.

When not to force the door

Do not pull hard on a locked door or try to bypass its lock. This can damage the washer or expose you to hot water. Do not open sealed panels or attempt internal repairs.

If the door stays locked after the cycle has ended, the washer has cooled, Child Lock is off, and the water has drained, stop troubleshooting. Check the model manual and contact a qualified technician if the problem continues.

Frequently asked questions

The cycle ended. Why is the door still locked?

The lock may need a few moments to release. The washer may also still detect water or heat, or the drum may still be spinning. Check that it has drained and cooled, and that the door-lock indicator is off.

How do I turn off Child Lock?

The button combination depends on the model. Check the washer’s display and follow the instructions in its manual. Restarting the washer may not turn Child Lock off.

Can I pull the door open if it will not release?

No. Do not force it or bypass the lock. Forcing the door can damage the washer, and hot water or steam can cause burns.

What if water remains inside?

If available, try a Spin Only cycle. For an emergency drain hose or user-removable drain filter, follow the model manual for access and use a suitable container. If the water will not drain or the door remains locked, contact a qualified technician.
