Does this guide apply to your appliance?

Match the brand, device type and complete display code. The same code can mean something different on another product family or market; a series name does not confirm every model in that series.

Likely causes

  • Drain hose kinked, pinched, or obstructed by debris
  • Drain hose inserted deeper than 4.5 inches (114 mm) into the standpipe, causing siphoning
  • Clogged drain pump filter or coin trap packed with lint and foreign objects
  • Standpipe or house plumbing clogged or installed at an incorrect height
  • Oversudsing caused by excess or non-HE detergent
  • Drain pump impeller obstruction or failed drain pump motor

What to try

Inspect and correct the drain hose installation

Easy
  1. Unplug the washing machine from the power source.
  2. Check the drain hose behind the machine for kinks, bends, pinches, or heavy crushing against the wall.
  3. Verify that the drain hose does not extend more than 4.5 inches (114 mm) down into the standpipe or wash basin to prevent siphoning.
  4. Ensure the drain hose is not taped or airtight inside the standpipe, as an air gap is necessary for proper draining.
  5. Confirm the top of the standpipe is at least 24 to 36 inches above the floor and does not exceed 96 inches in height.
  6. Check that the household drain pipe or utility sink is clearing water freely without backing up.

Clean the drain pump filter and coin trap

Moderate
  1. Disconnect the washer from electrical power and turn off the water supply taps.
  2. Place towels and a shallow container beneath the lower front access door or pump panel to collect residual water.
  3. Open the drain pump access door or remove the lower service panel as outlined in your model's user manual.
  4. If an auxiliary drain hose is present, uncork it over the basin to drain excess water first.
  5. Slowly turn the drain pump filter handle counterclockwise to allow remaining water to flow out.
  6. Remove the filter basket and clean away coins, lint, hairpins, and debris, then rinse it under clean water.
  7. Check inside the pump chamber to ensure the impeller moves freely without debris jamming it.
  8. Reinsert the filter, tighten it firmly clockwise to prevent leaks, replace the cover, and restore power.

This step is marked caution. Stop if you are not qualified to continue.

Perform a control power reset

Easy
  1. Press the Cancel or Power button twice to stop any active cycle.
  2. Unplug the washer's power cord from the wall outlet or switch off the dedicated circuit breaker.
  3. Keep the washer disconnected from electrical power for a full 5 minutes to allow the control board to reset.
  4. Plug the unit back in or reset the circuit breaker.
  5. Select and run a Drain & Spin cycle to confirm whether the washer successfully pumps out water.
  6. If the F9 E1 error persists or the pump makes a strained humming/grinding sound without expelling water, stop the machine and schedule an authorized service technician.

The code returned or the check did not help?

Avoid repeated resets and do not select a replacement part from the code alone. Record the exact code, full model number, when it appeared, and the checks you tried with their results. Share these details with the manufacturer or service technician.

Disconnecting power does not establish that internal components are safe to touch. This guide does not authorize opening electrical components or bypassing safety devices.
