Does this guide apply to your appliance?
Match the brand, device type and complete display code. The same code can mean something different on another product family or market; a series name does not confirm every model in that series.

Likely causes
- Door is not fully closed or latched firmly
- Laundry caught between the door seal and door glass
- Drum overloaded with laundry preventing proper closure
- Mechanical child safety lock engaged in a blocking position
- Faulty door interlock switch, latch pin, or internal wiring
What to try
Check Door Closure, Load, and Child Safety Lock
Easy- Open the washing machine door and check the perimeter for items trapped between the rubber door seal and the door glass.
- Check drum capacity; if overloaded, remove excess laundry to eliminate back-pressure on the door.
- Inspect the mechanical child lock (if fitted on the inside edge of the door) and ensure it is not engaged, using a coin or screwdriver to reset it if needed.
- Firmly push the door closed until you hear a clear, distinct click confirming the latch has engaged.
- Select your wash program and press Start/Pause to check if the error clears.
Inspect Door Hardware and Isolate for Service
Moderate- Inspect the door strike pin, latch mechanism, and hinges for signs of sagging, loosening, or physical damage.
- If the door is aligned and closes mechanically but error code E40 persists, the electronic door interlock switch or wiring is likely defective.
- Power off the washing machine and disconnect the plug from the electrical wall socket.
- Contact an Electrolux Authorized Service Center or a qualified appliance technician to test and replace the door interlock.
